Comfort in Comfort

WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY: STEVE HOLLOWAY

UPDATED JANUARY 6, 2021. Boerne is less than an hour away from our house with restaurants, shopping and antiquing. So we head over there a lot. A LOT!

To break things up, we go on up to Comfort.

Where to eat.

We start with lunch (or, if we’re early enough, breakfast) at High’s. It’s our must-stop for comfort foods with a chef’s touch including their Market Meatloaf with sliced red onion and secret sauce.

What to do.

Located just 15 minutes northwest of Boerne, Comfort is the perfect bonus stop for a bite to eat, a liquor tasting, some (more) antiquing and entertainment.

The atmosphere is a little less hectic than Boerne so it’s a comfortable, relaxing, calm contrast to Boerne or Fredericksburg.

Stop by Texas Moonshine for a tasting then stroll down High Street and take in the architecture. On this trip we also got  a surprise show from the extreme sand castle “engineer” who, unannounced, unexplained and uncredited created a masterpiece.

Finally we hit the antique stores before heading back to Boerne.

Comfort (re)visited

Two and half years after that 2015 visit, we (re)visited Comfort for my birthday, spending two days eating and shopping and staying overnight at The Hotel Faust.

Nothing sets up the Christmas season like the lights at The Faust. This historic, 1880s hotel has been updated and refreshed throughout while preserving the German Architecture of the original two story building that welcomed stagecoach travelers over 100 years ago.

From their covered porches with rocking chairs to the authentic lobby finishes to their luxury rooms, The Faust sends you back to a time when early settlers built the region.

UPDATE: Recently, the Hotel Faust was renamed the Hotel Giles to honor the architect of the original 1880s hotel, Alfred Giles and, to quote their web site, “to celebrate our million dollar renovation (so) guests can enjoy our newly renovated rooms including all the modern amenities you expect, luxury linens, in-room Keurig coffee and flat screen televisions.”

After a visit to High’s and a stay at The Hotel Faust (now Giles) you’ll know firsthand why Comfort made the Southernliving.com list of Small Towns We Love described as “five great little communities that are well worth a visit – or perhaps even a move”.
